Yahrzeit (Memorial) Board

TEMPLE ISRAEL
YAHRZEIT (MEMORIAL) BOARD

Memorial Boards (Yahrzeit Boards) are to be found in most synagogues and temples. Frequently they are cast in bronze with room for
individual plaques naming deceased relatives; a small electric bulb is next to each plaque and is illuminated when appropriate, either on the yahrzeit or during a yiskor service.

When Stratford's Beth Israel congregation closed some years ago, Temple Israel accepted some of the important religious items from their
synagogue. Our ner tamid was originally theirs; the Ark curtain on our wall was the parochet which one would see when their Ark was opened; and our small Torah was theirs. We were delighted to accept these gifts, and we made a commitment, in accepting their Memorial tablets, to hang them in our Sanctuary when we felt the time was right. Their Memorial Board has been taken out of storage and will soon be mounted on a Sanctuary wall.

Temple Israel is now mature enough to provide a means of honouring our own deceased beloved. If there is enough interest on the part of the general membership, it is our intention, to purchase a Yahrzeit Memorial for the listing of our own deceased.

If it is your intent to honour the deceased members of your family in this way, either now or in the near future, please give the Temple Office
the following information by mail, fax: 519-858-2070, or e-mail: Office@templeisraellondon.ca

Help Repair our Holocaust Torah

TEMPLE ISRAEL'S TORAH - OUR SPECIAL HERITAGE!

Temple Israel has restored one of its Torah scrolls. It is our large Torah, and it was in poor shape. There were missing letters, and in some places the ink was lifting from the page.

This Torah is on permanent loan from the Westminster Holocaust Scrolls Trust in London, England. Thelma and David Rosner brought it to us in 1984. The Torah was found in a warehouse in Prague after the Second World War. It is thought that the Nazis, having destroyed the synagogues and congregations of Czechoslovakia, saved some of the valuable items and had planned to put some of their booty on display in a museum of Jewish life to be erected after a Nazi conquest in Europe. At War’s end, the Czechoslovak government found 1563 Torah scrolls without a home.

Seventeen years later, the Westminster Synagogue in London, England, made an arrangement to take these Torah scrolls, to repair them and to lend them to congregations around the world. Our Torah is Number 357 of the Czech Memorial Scrolls. We don’t know where it came from, nor its age. But we can see that the scribe who wrote down the words is a master calligrapher.

We have an obligation to keep this Torah safe and in good repair.

The Torah has been taken to people in Toronto who put it back in good shape for us—repaired the lettering, and the scroll itself, and cleaned it. This work cost $6000. And we need new crowns (the silver adornment placed over the scroll handles), and they will cost $1000. The Temple does not have an extra $7000 in its budget for this work, so we are asking you to be part of this significant undertaking.

Please help us with your contribution. Cheques can be sent to the Temple office, marked “For the Torah repair”.

When you make a $36 donation to our Torah Repair and Maintenance fund, you (or a member of your family) will become a "Shomer" (guardian) of the Torah. You will be assigned a specific phrase within a Parashah of the Torha. On the Shabbat each year when that Parashah is read, you will be honoured for your donation, and once a year, you will have an opportunity to view the phrase that you were assigned.

For each $100 that you or your family pledges you will be invited to select a Parashah (weekly reading) that you wish to sponsor. This may be the Parashah that was read at your or a family member's Bar/Bat Mitzvah, for example, or one that has special meaning for you for any other reason. If you have no preferences, we will assign a Parashah for you to sponsor. You or somebody from your family that you designate will be named a "Gibbor" (hero) or "Gibbora" (heroine) of that Parashah.

On each Shabbat, the Gibborim for that Parashah will be honoured, and will be given an opportunity to have their own Aliyah (call-up to the Torah to read the B'racha before and after the reading) if they so wish, and they may also read from the Parashah if they so wish.

For those people who have already recently made donations to the Torah Restoration Fund, somebody will contact you or someone in your family to become a Gibbor or Shomer.

Mishkan T'filah Dedications

As you may know, we have replaced our old siddur, The Gates of Prayer, with the new Mishkan T’Filah siddur.

Some of you were very kind and generous to dedicate a copy of our former prayer book.
Would you perhaps like to re-dedicate that same dedication in a new Mishkan T’Filah Sidur?
Would you also like to dedicate a new prayer book to honour or remember someone else or to mark a special occasion?

Your donation would be $36 each (no tax)

Payment methods accepted: Cash, Cheque,Visa, MasterCard, Interac Debit Card.

Make cheques payable to: Temple Israel and send to

Thank you very much

Temple Israel Endowment Fund

 Temple Israel Endowment Fund

This fund was established several years ago with generous contributions from Abe Bonder, Desi and Kandice Brownstone , Jeff and Joyce Phillips and Keith Samitt.
The fund is managed by the London Jewish Community Foundation and all funds are held in perpetuity.

We have made a great start with our current donors and we are now receiving modest dividends from the fund.

This is a long term project that will require the accumulation of substantial capital for the interest income to provide enough money to support valuable programs and services.
The true beneficiaries of this fund will be our children and grandchildren.

One form of donation you may want to consider is buying a life insurance policy with the  fund as the beneficiary.
The advantages of this would be that you would make modest contributions during your life time and it would simplify your estate planning.
For more information please contact me.
-- Michael Shmukler

Managed under the London Jewish Community Foundation, all contributions to this Fund are held in perpetuity,
and the interest income will be provided each year to Temple Israel to help support our growing needs.

For Today... For the Future

We hope you will join us in creating an exciting and beneficial opportunity for the future of our Congregation -- The Temple Israel Endowment Fund.

Managed under the London Jewish Community Foundation, all contributions to this Fund are held in perpetuity, and the interest income will be provided each year to Temple Israel to help support our growing needs.

Please consider the difference you can make in the future of Temple Israel throug a donation today to the Temple Israel Endowment Fund.

For further information, or to make a donation, please contact Monica King, Director, London Jewish Community Foundation at 519-673-3310 or by email.

(A charitable tax receipt will be provided for the full amount of your donation.)

- TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YEAR-END TAX SAVINGS -
THROUGH A DONATION OF SECURITIES

As of the 2006 federal budget, donations of publicly traded securities to registered charities are 100% free of capital gains taxes. By making a donation of publicly traded securities to the Temple Israel Endowment Fund with the London Jewish Community Foundation, your taxable capital gain is eliminated. As well, you will receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the gift of securities to be used for tax purposes.

Notice to BCE Shareholders

The pending privatization of BCE by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan means that shareholders will be required to sell their shares by early 2008. For most, the sale of BCE shares will generate significant capital gains tax, unless the shares are held in tax-sheltered RRSPs or RRIFs. As a result, this may be a particularly good time to donate your BCE shares and benefit from sizeable capital gains tax savings.

Consider the difference you can make in the future of Temple Israel through a donation today to The Temple Israel Endowment Fund.

For further information, or to make a donation, please contact Monica King, Director, London Jewish Community Foundation at 519-673-3310 or at ujadir@ljf.on.ca

Jews on Bikes 2008

Thank you for supporting "Jews on Bikes."
We were able to raise $1,704 for kids in Sderot at "Walk the Land" on Sunday, June 1.
The community did this so that they could go to a summer camp, far away from the daily incoming rockets from Gaza.

We are $96 away from an even and symbolic $1,800.
Do we hear anyone saying," I'll top it off with $96!"

We await your response.

Once again, thank you

New Tzedakah Distribution Plan

NEW TZEDAKAH DISTRIBUTION PLAN ANNOUNCED

As all those attending services know, there is a “ pushke ” (tzedakah box) available for contributions. Beginning in September 2006, the money in the tzedakah box will be added to a proportion of the money in our Tzedakah Fund and that amount will be sent to a pre-selected recipient. In this way, those dropping spare coins into the tzedakah box at services and those sending in contributions to the Tzedakah Fund (for which tax receipts are issued) will know the recipient of their generosity.

Recipients for upcoming months are announced on the Social Action page.

The Social Action committee is currently drawing up a list of recipients for the coming year. They invite you to provide the name and website or other information for any group or organization which merits their attention. Please send your “nomination” to the Social Action chair.
