If you can’t drive in the dark, or you’re without a car (or license) and you want to come to Temple for any reason (a program, a service) please call the Temple Office with as much notice as you can, but even if it’s for the same day, please call.
Susan Glait, our Programming VP has been, in her words: "busy, busy and more busy (and enjoying the results)." BUT, she can't do it all on her own. So, if you can help with either of the following, let Susan (susang@templeisraellondon.ca) or the Temple Office (519-858-4400 or office@templeisraellondon.ca) know:
• Make calls or email for sponsors for Kiddushim and Onegs on an every other month basis.
• Help pitch in for our Congregational Kabbalat Shabbat dinners
Please join us for any Shabbat or Holiday service, for High Holy Days, and for any program that interests you. Contact office@templeisraellondon.ca or 519-858-4400.

London Pomegranate Guild
London Pomegranate Guild
The London Pomegranate Guild is off to a great start.
Eleven women met to talk about Jewish Arts and Crafts. What an amazing and diverse group we are. Some are knitters, weavers, crocheters, embroiderers, jewelry makers, sewers. Some have great skills and some just want to learn. Ronnee Alter showed us some of her projects to lend inspiration. We talked about where we wanted to go with ideas and plans for the future. We are going to meet on the 2nd Sunday of each month.
Next meeting is February 12th at 2pm.
Come and join us. Bring along a project you are working on or just an idea for a project or come for inspiration or education. We are looking for anyone who is interested in studying and creating textile art and needlework based on Jewish themes. We welcome all ages and skill levels from the professional to the novice.

‘The First to Jump Were Women’: The Tragedy of the New York 1911 Triangle Factory Fire
Speaker: Monda Halpern
In March of 1911, 146 labourers, most of them young Jewish women, lost their lives in a fire that ravaged the upper floors of the New York City garment factory in which they were working. For many New Yorkers, their deaths symbolized a corrupt capitalist system, the exploitation of immigrant workers, and the need for legal and social reforms to improve both women’s rights and factory safety. With the exception of 9/11, this preventable tragedy is widely considered the worst workplace disaster in the city’s history.
Monda Halpern is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at The University of Western Ontario. She specializes in nineteenth and twentieth-century North American women’s history and Jewish history. Monda is the author of And On That Farm He Had a Wife: Ontario Farm Women and Feminism, 1900-1970 (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2001), and is completing work on her second book Alicein Shandehland: Scandal and Scorn in the Edelson/Horwitz Murder Case.

IsraelFront and Centre – Why?
Speaker: Derek J. Penslar
Why does the international community and media pay so much attention to Israel? The reasons are many and complex, and they have to do both with unique features about Israel and the long and often troubled legacy of Gentile perceptions of Jews.
Derek J. Penslar is the Samuel Zacks Professor of Jewish History at the University of Toronto. He is author or editor of ten books, including Shylock’s Children: Economics and Jewish Identity in Modern Europe (2001); Israel in History: The Jewish State in Comparative Perspective (2006); and The Origins of Israel: A Documentary History(2011). He is currently completing a book titled Uniform Identities: Jews and the Military in Modern History. He is also the co-editor of two scholarly journals, The Journal of Israeli History and Jewish Social Studies. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard and Columbia, and in 2012 will assume the Stanley Lewis Professorship of Israel Studies at Oxford. He is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy for Jewish Research.

Temple Israel’s 25th Anniversary Cookbook Still Needs Your Input!
Send us your favourite recipes, with a brief note or line about each one - its source, how it evolved, why your family likes it, tips on making it, anything at all you are willing to share. We will compile them all, hopefully one from each family member, to be published in honour of our 25th year with the Reform movement.
You can submit your annotated recipes to Yolanda Tomaszewski by email - yola27@gmail.com- or leave hard copies, handwritten or photocopied, etc, in the Temple Office.
